Huawei MatePad PaperMatte Edition: the world's thinnest tablet at 4.7mm, with a 13.2" flexible OLED 144Hz display, Kirin T93 Pro chipset, a 10400mAh battery, and a six-speaker audio system. Explore the full specs.

What Are the Pros and Cons of the Huawei MatePad PaperMatte Edition?

Pros

  • The world's thinnest tablet: just 4.7mm thick and 499g, making it thinner than the iPad Pro, with a durable metal build despite the slimness.
  • An exceptional display: a 13.2-inch flexible OLED panel with 3K resolution, a 144Hz refresh rate, 1600-nit peak brightness, and ultra-slim 3.55mm bezels, with a PaperMatte edition featuring an anti-glare coating to reduce glare for reading and drawing.
  • A large battery and strong audio: a 10400mAh battery (good for around 14 hours of video playback) and a six-speaker audio system, with support for reverse charging to turn the tablet into a power bank for a connected phone.
  • An excellent stylus experience for artists: the M-Pencil Pro with 10,000 pressure sensitivity levels, low-latency NearLink technology, and a hexagonal shape for directional control, with the GoPaint app for digital drawing. It also features Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0, and supports HUAWEI SuperCharge up to 100W (sold separately in the EU).

Cons

  • The biggest and most important drawback: no Google services: the device runs via the AppGallery store without the Play Store or native support for YouTube, Maps, Gmail, and Google productivity tools, which reviews called the biggest negative for Western users despite the impressive hardware.
  • The chipset is not the newest: the Kirin T93 Pro, with performance comparable to flagship chips from about two years ago (close to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2) due to US restrictions on Huawei.
  • The global OS has a dated base: the software on global devices is based on a heavily modified version of Android 12, requiring unofficial workarounds (microG/Aurora Store) to run Google apps.
  • The price is very high and storage is non-expandable: starting at £999.99 (about $1,360) for the base 12/256GB version, and storage is not expandable. The accessories (stylus and keyboard) are sold separately.
