Xiaomi Joins the Android 17 Race — With a HyperOS Surprise

Xiaomi opened up its Android 17 Developer Preview program today, with the first three devices eligible. It looks like Xiaomi won't jump to HyperOS 4, but will pair HyperOS 3.3 with Android 17. The company is skipping the HyperOS 3.2 version for some reason.

Eligible Devices — Four Flagships

The Android 17 Developer Preview program currently covers four specific models: the Xiaomi 17, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, the Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi, and the Xiaomi 15T Pro.

It will allow app creators to ensure their software runs smoothly on the new platform long before the official public release.

The Surprise — HyperOS 3.3 Instead of 3.2

The biggest shocker of this Developer Preview isn't just the arrival of Android 17 — it is the software framework it is built upon. This update officially introduces the foundation for Xiaomi HyperOS 3.3. Interestingly, Xiaomi has completely skipped over OS 3.2. While the internal reasons for skipping a whole version number remain a mystery, from a technical standpoint, it strongly suggests a massive architectural shift rather than an incremental update.

Based on the Android 17 core being directly aligned with Xiaomi HyperOS 3.3, this means the HyperOS 4 release is scheduled for later this year.

What's New in This Build?

The first Android 17 + HyperOS Developer Preview shows the groundwork for a new HyperOS design, but we will have to wait for future versions to get a better grasp of what's to come.

The Developer Preview mainly focuses on improving app compatibility testing, introducing updated system APIs for developers, enhancing backend performance, and enabling early integration with the Android 17 architecture.

Usage Warnings

As Android 17 is still in the beta test phase, it is possible that stability issues may occur. It is not recommended for daily use. Flashing the ROM will erase all data on the device.

Installation method: download ROM file → copy to File Manager → Settings → About Phone → tap HyperOS 10 times → select update package.

How Does It Compare to Competitors?

Xiaomi isn't the first Android third-party partner to offer an Android 17 Developer Preview. Motorola kicked off its Android 17 beta program back in February, much to the surprise of many — well ahead of everyone else.
