A number of Windows 11 users have reported unexpected issues after installing Microsoft's latest security update, with complaints ranging from system freezes and display failures to sudden restarts.
The update carries the identifier KB5079473 — the cumulative update for March 2026, released on March 10 for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. It was designed primarily to strengthen security and introduce minor improvements, including better handling of Secure Boot certificates, improved File Explorer search reliability, and updates related to WDAC COM allowlisting.
The update bumps the system to build numbers 26100.8037 and 26200.8037.
Some users reported difficulties running essential applications like Microsoft Office and Outlook, while others described failures in system tools such as Command Prompt and the Print Screen shortcut. Error code 0x800704b3 appeared on certain machines after the update was installed.
In more severe cases, storage volumes became inaccessible on some Samsung Galaxy Book devices, and graphics-acceleration-dependent applications failed on Dell Precision workstations. One user reported three consecutive full system crashes that forced manual reboots and resulted in lost unsaved work.
Screenshots circulating online show critical error messages including the Blue Screen of Death with the ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY code appearing under workload, causing file loss and disrupting essential software workflows.
Experts advise affected users to temporarily pause updates via Windows Update settings, or remove the update if it has caused issues, and submit reports through the Feedback Hub tool to help Microsoft identify the root cause.
