WABetaInfo spotted references in the latest WhatsApp beta release pointing to plans for a new paid subscription tier called "WhatsApp Plus." Meta confirmed to TechCrunch that it plans to test premium subscriptions across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp in the coming months.
The most important point upfront: WhatsApp will remain free to use, with the upcoming Plus tier being an entirely optional subscription offering extra perks. Text messaging, voice and video calls, media sharing, and privacy protections all remain free for every user.
Visual Customization: Around 14 new app icon options, multiple accent colors, and new themes for the app's interface.
Inbox Organization: The ability to pin up to 20 conversations — up from the current limit of just 3. While this may not seem like a big deal, it's genuinely useful for heavy WhatsApp users.
Ad Removal: One key focus of the subscription is removing ads displayed in the Updates tab, where sponsored content has started appearing in select regions.
Exclusive Content: Access to exclusive sticker packs, new ringtones to distinguish WhatsApp calls from other apps, and more immersive message reactions.
Some beta users see a banner inside the app's settings page or sticker keyboard inviting them to join a waitlist. Signing up means receiving a notification when the service becomes available — joining the waitlist does not automatically enroll users or require any financial commitment.
For now, the feature is limited to a small group of beta testers in select regions, with gradual expansion expected in the coming weeks.
Ironically, WhatsApp started as a paid messaging platform before taking the free route — and Meta is now partially reversing course.
Meta says the new subscriptions will unlock more productivity and creativity alongside expanded AI capabilities, with each app subscription having a distinct set of exclusive features.
The subscription arrives alongside other features in testing, including status updates in channels, paid partnership labels for sponsored content, and analytics for forwarded updates — signaling WhatsApp's evolution from a pure messaging app into a customizable communication platform.
Pricing hasn't been confirmed yet and is expected to vary by region. No official launch date is in sight for now.
