TikTok is introducing an ad-free subscription plan in the UK that costs £3.99 (~$5.44) per month. The new offering is rolling out over the coming months and will be available to users 18 and over.
The launch was likely driven by the UK's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which prohibits companies from collecting users' personal data for advertising purposes without their explicit consent.
The move follows Meta's launch of premium ad-free subscriptions for Facebook and Instagram users in Europe in 2023, although that was positioned as a response to EU regulations on personalizing ads.
Users who sign up for the plan won't see ads on TikTok, and their data won't be used for advertising purposes.
What Remains Despite the Subscription: While ads will be removed from subscribers' feeds, they'll still see posts from creators that have been paid or sponsored. Creator-sponsored content is technically not a "TikTok ad."
Since yesterday, UK users aged 18 and over have begun receiving notifications asking them to choose between paying for TikTok Ad-Free or continuing to use the app for free with personalised advertising. Users will have until November 11 to make their choice.
The UK is TikTok's biggest market in Europe: last June it said that more than 30 million Brits were using the app — around 43% of the country's population.
Meta rolled out a similar feature on Facebook and Instagram in the UK last fall for £3 (~$4) per month. TikTok at £3.99 is slightly more expensive.
It's unknown whether TikTok plans to bring the offering to the US.
