There are many reasons to temporarily disable your keyboard — preventing children from pressing keys during a video, cleaning the keyboard while the PC is running, or preventing others from using your computer while you're away. Windows doesn't provide a direct setting to disable the keyboard, but two easy methods work on all Windows versions.
On Windows 10/11: Press Windows + X → select Device Manager. On Windows 7/XP: Go to Control Panel → search for Device Manager. In the Device Manager window, expand Keyboards, right-click the keyboard driver, and select Uninstall device. Confirm by clicking Uninstall. The keyboard will be disabled immediately. It will automatically re-enable after restarting the computer.
Download the free KeyFreeze program, install and run it. Click Lock Keyboard & Mouse — a 5-second countdown begins before the keyboard and mouse are disabled. To unlock, press Ctrl + Alt + Del.
BlueLife KeyFreeze is a portable alternative (no installation needed) that disables all keyboard buttons including function keys and the power button, and also hides the mouse cursor. Its icon appears in the system tray notification area with a 5-second countdown before locking.
