Google Chrome is the world's most popular browser, but it can become slow over time due to accumulated cache, too many extensions, or lack of hardware acceleration. Here are five effective steps to speed it up without installing any extra software.
Go to Chrome Settings (three dots menu) → System → enable Use hardware acceleration when available → click Relaunch. This offloads some processing tasks from the CPU to the GPU, significantly improving page rendering and video playback speed.
Press Shift + Esc to open Chrome's built-in Task Manager. You'll see all open tabs and extensions with their memory and CPU usage. Select any process consuming excessive resources and click End Process to free up memory instantly.
Go to three dots menu → More Tools → Extensions. Disable or remove any extensions you don't actively use — they run in the background and consume memory even when idle.
Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete → set Time range to All time → check Cached images and files and Cookies → click Clear data. Regularly clearing the cache prevents performance degradation over time.
Click three dots → Help → About Google Chrome. Chrome will automatically check for and install available updates. Running the latest version ensures the best performance and security fixes.
