Sony officially unveiled the Xperia 1 VIII after weeks of accumulated leaks — and what emerged is the boldest design in Xperia 1 series history.
The Sony Xperia 1 VIII is the biggest design change seen from the brand in a while. The traffic-light style camera arrangement has been changed to a square-shaped module towards the left side of the phone with an angled side sloping down the frame. There's also a new texture, inspired by rough stone, that Sony is calling 'ORE'.
The color options have been livened up: the classic Graphite Black is joined by Iolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold.
Sony held the line on its heritage: a 3.5mm headphone jack with Walkman-tuned audio circuitry, microSD card slot, flat display with symmetrical bezels, selfie camera in the top bezel rather than a punch-hole, and front-facing stereo speakers.
48MP main camera on a 1/1.35-inch sensor at f/1.9, 24mm equivalent; 48MP ultrawide on a 1/1.56-inch sensor at f/2.0, 16mm equivalent; and a 48MP telephoto macro at 70mm and f/2.8 on a new 1/1.56-inch sensor roughly four times larger than last year's variable-zoom telephoto.
The new telephoto has a 48Mp 1/1.58-inch sensor rather than a tiny 12Mp 1/3.5-inch unit — meaning significantly better low-light performance and more impressive natural bokeh. The minimum focus distance is 15cm rather than the astonishing 4cm of the Xperia 1 VII.
Sony placed a lot of emphasis on its new AI camera assistant. When taking a photo, it analyzes the scene and suggests switching the lens, applying a filter, or enabling portrait mode. If you know what you're doing, you can turn the feature off entirely.
