Sony officially confirmed the date for the next flagship Xperia launch — May 13 (Wednesday). The company just shared a new teaser video on its official YouTube channel, which doesn't reveal much, but it does hint at a new layout for the triple camera.
The 21-second clip starts by showing rock formations slowly moving over each other. Then at 10 seconds in, Sony focuses on three cross sections with a fourth in the background. Finally, the camera zooms out to reveal these rocks in a room behind a screen with three circular cut-outs.
The 20-second video also shows a quick outline of the phone's cameras, which will be arranged within a square layout this time around, versus the vertical array in previous Xperia 1-series phones.
CAD-based renders show a brand new look for the back of the upcoming Mark 8 model with a square camera island in the top left corner that holds three lenses. The lenses (16mm, 24mm, and 70mm, allegedly) are arranged in a triangle instead of a single column like on all previous generations.
For years, Sony has mostly stuck to the same vertical camera layout on the Xperia 1 series since 2020. This time, the company appears to be moving toward a more modern square-shaped camera module.
Despite the redesign, the Xperia 1 VIII is still expected to lean heavily into creator-focused features. Sony doesn't seem interested in abandoning the things Xperia fans actually buy these phones for.
Three lenses in a triangular formation (16mm+24mm+70mm) instead of a vertical line means: larger sensors can be used for each lens, better heat distribution, a design closer to professional camera clusters like Hasselblad's approach with OPPO, and a visual break from the traditional Xperia identity.
The company also posted the live stream link where everyone will be able to watch the Sony Xperia 1 VIII unveiling. This link became active — the event was scheduled for 2am UTC on May 13.
