Samsung released the stable One UI 8.5 update for the Galaxy A16 5G last month, and it has now begun testing the Android 17-based One UI 9 for the smartphone.
This proves Samsung is working in a systematic and accelerated manner in update development — not waiting for the current update wave to finish before starting the next generation. This parallel approach reduces the time gap between A-Series completing One UI 8.5 and starting to receive One UI 9.
The One UI 9 build for the Galaxy A16 5G spotted on Samsung's server has firmware version A166BXXU8EZF1 and is being tested for the European market.
Don't expect the smartphone to receive One UI 9 beta or stable update anytime soon however, as Samsung has already rolled out One UI 9 beta for the Galaxy S26 series, which is likely to receive the stable update first.
Samsung previously said that its upcoming folding smartphones will be the first to run One UI 9 out of the box. Samsung is expected to unveil three folding smartphones this year — Galaxy Z Flip8, Galaxy Z Fold8, and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. Rumors claim they will be unveiled on July 22 at an event in London.
Priority order for receiving One UI 9: first Fold8 and Flip8 phones (July 2026 out of the box), then Galaxy S26 Series (first stable update), then Galaxy S25, A-Series, and others in sequence.
Samsung is also working on One UI 9 for the Galaxy S25 series, Galaxy A17 5G, Galaxy A34, Galaxy A57, and the unannounced Galaxy S26 FE.
This list confirms Samsung is working at an unprecedented pace in update deployment — One UI 8.5 hasn't finished full rollout yet and One UI 9 is in internal testing for a wide range of devices.
One UI 9 is built on Android 17 — Google revealed Android 17 at I/O with new privacy and AI features. Samsung will add Galaxy AI improvements, an updated user interface, and possibly design elements inspired by Liquid Glass. The full feature announcement will come with the Fold8 and Flip8 launch in July.
Based on Samsung's usual pattern: Fold8/Flip8 (July 2026), Galaxy S26 (August-September), Galaxy S25 (October-November), Galaxy A-Series (December 2026 to mid-2027). Galaxy A16 5G will most likely receive it in Q1 or Q2 2027.
