While the first-generation Galaxy Z TriFold ships without stylus support, a new patent suggests Samsung is actively looking into a way to include a stylus in the upcoming model — integrating the S Pen directly into the structure as it does with Galaxy S Ultra models.

The Engineering Concept — Hinge Instead of Body

Samsung appears to be exploring a hinge-based storage system for the stylus in what could become the Galaxy Z TriFold 2. Rather than housing the S Pen inside the body like the Galaxy S Ultra range, the design integrates the stylus directly into the foldable hinge assembly.

Patent images shared by tipster @xleaks7 show the pen stored vertically within a dedicated compartment built into the hinge itself. The patent suggests the system would use magnetic retention to keep the stylus secure, while also supporting charging and detection features to recognize whether the pen is docked correctly.

Why This Approach Makes Sense

Samsung's first tri-fold device skipped S Pen integration altogether, likely due to space limitations and internal complexity. A tri-fold phone already has to manage multiple hinges, flexible display layers, batteries, and cooling systems inside a relatively thin chassis. Finding extra room for a stylus was always going to be difficult. This new hinge-based approach could help work around that problem.

The design could also allow the stylus to charge while docked, which would avoid the bulk of a traditional built-in silo and keep the chassis slimmer than a body-mounted slot would allow.

The Charging and Detection System

The magnetic stylus solution that Samsung patented would reportedly stay in place using magnets and charge while docked inside the phone, very similar to how the system works on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. The patent describes a TriFold device with a dedicated cavity inside the chassis where the S Pen could slide in and recharge.

The Potential Engineering Challenges

The soft inner display itself seems to form much of the storage channel around the stylus on three sides. That could become a durability concern, since repeated insertion and removal of the S Pen may end up rubbing directly against the folding display layer over time.

A previous rumor suggests that Samsung wants to make the Z TriFold 2 thinner and lighter than the original, so it sounds like that would make it even harder for that device to have space for an S Pen.

Integrating the S Pen into the hinge could result in one of the phone's three sections being shorter than the others, leading to an asymmetrical design that some users may not appreciate.
