According to a new rumor from Digital Chat Station on Weibo, the OnePlus 16's screen will have a 185Hz refresh rate. The company was previously rumored to be testing going up to 240Hz, but it allegedly cancelled those plans as such a high refresh rate "could affect the display" and "may not be feasible for widespread adoption".
Cancelling 240Hz is a deliberate engineering decision — displays at very high refresh rates like 240Hz suffer from higher heat and faster OLED pixel degradation over time. 185Hz as a base rate already delivers a scrolling and response experience that even competitive gamers barely notice the difference from 240Hz.
The display panel itself has already been ordered from China's BOE, and it will be a 6.78-inch size with "1.5K" resolution. Compared to the OnePlus 15's screen, it has higher brightness, a wider color gamut, and lower power consumption. It will also come with the narrowest symmetrical bezels ever seen on a OnePlus device, each measuring less than 1mm.
Three simultaneous display improvements: higher brightness + wider colors + lower power — this is what the new generation of BOE X-Series panels delivers. Achieving all three improvements simultaneously in one screen signals a genuinely qualitative leap over OnePlus 15.
Sub-1mm symmetrical bezels on all sides are among the narrowest in any current smartphone — creating a near-borderless visual experience.
The OnePlus 16 will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro SoC, Qualcomm's upcoming top dog for the latter part of the year. The phone is said to have a 9,000mAh battery too.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro — the upcoming generation of Qualcomm chips not yet released. Its use in OnePlus 16 means the phone will launch after this processor's release in the second half of 2026. A 9,000mAh battery with the narrowest bezels and slimmest chassis is the biggest engineering challenge — maintaining all these ambitious specifications in a daily-use device.
OnePlus is now rumored to be launching the 16 in September.
September 2026 is the most crowded month for flagships in industry history — Xiaomi 18, vivo X500, Oppo Find X10, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Ultra, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, and now OnePlus 16. Competition will be unprecedented.
