Apple, which long kept its distance from the foldable phone market despite Samsung, Huawei, and others dominating this category for years, is now on the verge of its first step into this world. The highly anticipated device under the name iPhone Ultra (also referred to as iPhone Fold) has been headlining tech news for months, and each new leak adds a detail that builds anticipation further.
The latest leaks came from a tipster on Chinese platform Weibo and revealed two pivotal details: a vapor chamber for cooling and a liquid metal hinge — both pointing to exceptional engineering in a phone that is supposed to be extremely slim.
A vapor chamber is a passive cooling system used in laptops and high-end phones — a flat chamber filled with liquid that evaporates when absorbing heat from the processor, transferring it efficiently to cool walls where it condenses and returns to the start in a continuous cycle. The result: a cooler processor and more stable performance without thermal throttling.
The major challenge in foldable phones is space — the slim chassis required for an elegant folding experience significantly tightens the room for internal components. Integrating an effective vapor chamber in such a chassis is a genuine engineering achievement.
The tipster claims that Apple has achieved "impressive VC cooling performance" on the iPhone Ultra. Despite the space constraints due to a slim design, Apple appears to have successfully added a vapor chamber cooling system into the device.
In another post, the tipster claimed that the iPhone Ultra will use a liquid metal hinge.
Liquidmetal is a technology Apple has held patents for since years and uses in specific parts of its products. Its advantages over titanium and steel include higher rigidity, greater flexibility, and better corrosion resistance — ideal qualities for a hinge folded and unfolded thousands of times. Using this technology in the hinge means a longer device lifespan and a smoother, more durable opening and closing experience.
The leakster also suggests that the device remains on track for a September launch. This aligns with earlier reports from Mark Gurman, the most prominent analyst tracking Apple products, who had previously reported that the iPhone Fold is on track for a September debut.
Apple has launched iPhone models in September every year for years — timing the iPhone Ultra foldable at the same event as the usual iPhone lineup would make it one of the most exciting Apple launch events in its history.
Notably, Apple first introduced vapor chamber cooling in the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. This means the move from iPhone 17 Pro to the iPhone Ultra foldable is not merely a technology transfer but a development of it to work in a far more challenging engineering environment. This points to Apple's serious investment in this first foldable generation — not merely testing the waters.
