According to a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is currently working on the 2nd-generation iPhone Air, which is likely to debut in the spring of 2027. The 1st-gen iPhone Air was introduced in September 2025.
Gurman's report — the most reliable journalist covering Apple for years — is a significant announcement: iPhone Air 2 is coming with clear specific improvements addressing the main criticisms of the first generation.
The report, citing people familiar with the matter, claims that the next-generation iPhone Air will feature a dual rear camera setup. Unlike its predecessor, the handset is said to add an ultrawide camera alongside the primary sensor.
The first iPhone Air had only one rear camera — this was its most prominent criticism despite commercial success (twice iPhone 16 Plus sales according to previous reports). Adding an ultrawide in iPhone Air 2 directly addresses this shortcoming — giving users the option of wide-angle photography without upgrading to Pro.
The device is reportedly codenamed V62 and said to be powered by Apple's A20 Pro chip — the same processor expected to debut in this year's iPhone 18 Pro models.
Using A20 Pro in Air 2 is a surprise — most expected A20 (not Pro). Using the same Pro chip means outstanding performance with exceptional power efficiency. But it raises a question: how does Apple differentiate Air 2 with A20 Pro from iPhone 18 Pro itself? The answer lies in the slim design and price.
The iPhone Air 2 will retain a design similar to the current model but is expected to offer improved battery life. It remains unclear whether the gains will come from a larger battery or a more efficient chipset with software optimizations.
The first iPhone Air's battery was a weak point due to its 5.6mm thinness — no room for a large battery in such a slim chassis. A20 Pro with higher thermal efficiency may deliver better battery life from the same battery size.
The iPhone Air 2 is said to launch alongside the standard iPhone 18 in spring 2027 — part of Apple's new two-batch launch pattern split between September 2026 and spring 2027.
This confirms Apple's new pattern: two annual batches. September 2026: iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max (and possibly Ultra). Spring 2027: iPhone 18 standard, iPhone Air 2, and possibly iPhone 18e. A completely different distribution from what iPhone buyers were accustomed to.
