Apple released iOS 26.5 on Monday May 11, 2026, and it is available right now for every iPhone running iOS 26. The update brings two confirmed new features, patches more than 50 security vulnerabilities, and lays the groundwork for one change that is not live yet but will be significant when it arrives.
iOS 26.5 brings a small but important improvement to the Messages app: support for encrypted RCS messaging. Text messages exchanged between iPhone and Android users via RCS are now end-to-end encrypted by default, matching iMessage's long-standing privacy protection. End-to-end encryption is on by default with a toggle in the Messages section of Settings.
iMessage has always been end-to-end encrypted when messaging another iPhone user. RCS messages between iPhone and Android were not previously encrypted at the same level. iOS 26.5 changes that.
Important note: the feature is in beta and requires carrier support on both ends of the conversation. Encrypted messages are denoted with a small lock symbol.
Apple Maps gets a useful addition in iOS 26.5 to help you discover new places. Suggested Places is baked into the search screen inside Maps. Whenever you tap the search bar, you'll see recommendations based on "what's trending nearby and your recent searches."
iOS 26.5 lays groundwork for ads in Apple Maps but they aren't live yet. Apple previously announced Maps ads would arrive in the US and Canada "this summer." When they arrive, ads will appear in search results with an "Ad" label.
iOS 26.5 includes the new Pride Luminance wallpaper with 11 colorful variants to choose from. There's also a custom option that lets you choose exactly which colors are featured — as few as 1 color or as many as 12 in your custom wallpaper.
iOS 26.5 updates snooze options in the Reminders app to show precise times rather than vague labels. Instead of "This Afternoon" or "This Evening," you'll now see "Remind Me at 3:00 PM" or "Remind Me in 1 hour."
iOS 26.5 addresses more than 50 vulnerabilities, so it's a good idea to update as soon as possible to get the latest protections. None of the vulnerabilities are known to have been actively exploited.
The major AI features and redesigned Siri ecosystem didn't arrive in iOS 26.5 and will be the centerpiece of iOS 27, to be announced at WWDC on June 8.
