Huawei established a unique position in the foldable market by launching the world's first commercial tri-fold smartphone. Now leaks suggest the second generation is on its way. New details about the true successor to the Mate XT Ultimate Edition suggest the device will be called the Mate XT2 and is expected to bring several upgrades over the Mate XT from 2024 as well as the more recently launched Mate XTs.
According to Chinese tipster Hyperdimensional Realm on Weibo, the Huawei Mate XT2 could launch in October 2026. The device is said to debut alongside the upcoming Mate 90 series. This represents a slight delay compared to previous generations — the original Mate XT launched in September 2024 and the Mate XTs arrived in September 2025.
The Mate XT2 is said to be powered by the Kirin 9050 Pro chipset. The processor is expected to place a strong focus on on-device AI capabilities. For context, the Mate XTs featured the Kirin 9020, while the original Mate XT came with the Kirin 9010. Jumping to the 9050 Pro represents a meaningful leap in performance and efficiency.
The Mate XT2 is tipped to pack a battery larger than 6,000mAh — a noticeable jump over the 5,600mAh battery in the previous generation. For a tri-fold device with a large unfolded display, this capacity increase directly addresses one of the first generation's most cited weaknesses.
The Mate XT2 is also tipped to feature an upgraded hinge designed to significantly reduce the display crease. Display crease visibility was one of the most common criticisms of the first generation, and improving it would meaningfully elevate the day-to-day experience. The device is also expected to support stylus input, adding greater flexibility for productivity use cases when the full display is open.
The camera is expected to match the Mate X7, which launched in November last year with a 50MP RYYB main sensor with f/1.4-f/4.0 aperture and OIS, a 40MP RYYB ultrawide, and a 50MP RYYB periscope telephoto with 3.5x optical zoom and OIS. This is one of the strongest camera setups currently available on any Huawei device.
Available colors may include Mystic Black, Auspicious Red, Crimson Purple, and Bright White, offering a range of premium finishes that suit different tastes.
Huawei remains the only company to have successfully launched a commercial tri-fold smartphone. Samsung released the W25 Tri-Fold but Huawei continues to hold the pioneering position in this category. With its multiple upgrades, the Mate XT2 appears set to strengthen that lead further.
