Huawei FreeBuds Pro 5 Review — Superb Sound, Potent ANC, Refined Design

The FreeBuds Pro 5 recently made their global debut. After over a week of testing before launch, the verdict is clear: a great option with superb sound, potent ANC, and top-notch build quality — in a market where refinement rather than revolution is the story.

Design

The FreeBuds Pro 5 follow the same in-ear design with silicone tips and short stems, but are slightly more compact at 5.5 grams per earbud. The case is the same size as the FreeBuds Pro 4's but slightly narrower and lighter at 43 grams, with a satin texture to prevent fingerprints. A new circular LED status bar indicates pairing, connectivity, and battery level through color changes.

IP57 for the buds and IP54 for the case — an upgrade over the IP54-rated FreeBuds Pro 4.

Huawei analyzed over 10,000 human ears and iterated through 1,000+ earbud designs and 60+ ear tip variations — resulting in one of the most comfortable in-ear fits available. Note that foam ear tips are not included this time, unlike the FreeBuds Pro 4 — a step back in passive isolation.

Key Features

Bluetooth 6.0 with dual-device connection, Kirin A3 chipset, and NearLink 2.0 support for lossless streaming up to 4.6Mbps — but only when paired with a compatible Pura 80 or Mate XTs device running HarmonyOS 6.

Eight microphones total — 3 silicon mics per earbud plus a bone conduction mic — with Huawei claiming 100dB of surrounding noise reduction during calls even in winds up to 10m/s.

Audio Performance

An 11mm main dynamic driver paired with a micro-planar tweeter, redesigned magnets, dual independent DSPs, and dual air vents — with bass extension down to 10Hz compared to 14Hz in the FreeBuds Pro 4.

The default audio profile delivers a wide soundstage with bouncy bass, excellent separation, and natural treble. Compared to FreeBuds Pro 4, the new model offers richer bass with less distortion and better upper-mid emphasis.

That said, the leap in audio quality between Pro 4 and Pro 5 is not as dramatic as seen in previous generations — a common theme across flagship earbuds. The reviewer still prefers the Sony WF-1000XM6's wider soundstage, but rates FreeBuds Pro 5 among the best wireless earbuds available.

Noise Cancellation

The new counter-noise system beams inverted-phase sounds from both drivers per earbud alongside a real-time AI sensing model — delivering 220% more external noise reduction compared to FreeBuds Pro 4.

Notably improved in the 50–300Hz range, effectively silencing HVAC systems, fans, and washing machines. More consistent ANC across the full frequency range with reduced white hiss.

Against stronger noise sources like traffic and speech, FreeBuds Pro 5 deliver subtler muffling than the Sony WF-1000XM6, which the reviewer rates as a clear step above most current earbuds for ANC.

Controls and Extras

Unusually, FreeBuds Pro 5 support all three control methods — pinch, tap, and swipe — while most competitors offer only one. Features include spatial audio with head tracking, wear detection, head gestures for calls, and a 10-band custom EQ with 8 preset profiles.
