Switching from Android to iPhone is exciting, but losing your WhatsApp chat history is the last thing you want. The problem is that WhatsApp doesn't offer a direct built-in way to move messages between the two platforms. Android stores WhatsApp backups on Google Drive, while iPhone uses iCloud, and these two systems simply don't communicate. The good news is there are reliable methods that actually work.
This is Apple's official solution and the most straightforward option, especially if your iPhone is brand new or you're willing to reset it.
Start by backing up your WhatsApp on Android — go to Settings, then Chats, then Chat Backup, and tap Back Up. Next, begin the iPhone setup process and follow the steps until you reach the "Transfer Your Apps and Data" screen, then choose "From Android." You'll see a code on screen. Now download the Move to iOS app on your Android, open it, enter the code, and select WhatsApp from the list of data you want to transfer. Once the transfer is complete, install WhatsApp on your iPhone and sign in with the same phone number you used on Android.
One important limitation to keep in mind: this method only works with regular WhatsApp accounts, not WhatsApp Business. You can also only transfer one account per migration.
If your iPhone is already set up and you don't want to reset it, iCareFone Transfer is your best bet. It works by connecting both phones with a USB-C cable and transfers messages, photos, videos, and voice notes completely. It does come at a cost, but it saves you the hassle of a factory reset.
If you only need specific conversations rather than your full history, WhatsApp's built-in export feature can help. Open the chat you want, tap the three dots, go to More, then Export Chat. Send it to your email and open it on your iPhone. Keep in mind this method doesn't import the chats directly into WhatsApp on your iPhone — it just gives you a text file of the conversation.
No, Google Drive won't work for this. While Android saves WhatsApp backups to Drive, the iPhone simply cannot read those backup files because both systems use different encryption. You'll need to use one of the methods mentioned above to successfully move your chats.
Make sure both devices are well charged before starting the transfer. Stay connected to a stable Wi-Fi network throughout the process. Clear up storage space on your iPhone to make sure all the data fits. And always create a fresh WhatsApp backup on your Android right before you begin, just to be safe.
