Even when apps are closed manually, some system-level processes can linger in the background. These steps will help you harness the full power of your iPhone for a smoother, more stable gaming experience.
Restarting your iPhone still works — not in a vague "try turning it off and on again" way. Games that lagged have been seen to run smoother after a simple reboot. Restarting clears temporary files, resets RAM usage, and shuts down background processes that may have piled up quietly. Even when apps are closed manually, some system-level stuff can linger. A fresh restart wipes the slate clean.
Swipe up from the bottom of the screen → hold briefly in the center until app cards appear → swipe all apps upward to close them.
This doesn't mean obsessively closing apps all day. But when about to jump into a high-demand title — especially something 3D-heavy or online — it's smart to give your iPhone as much breathing room as possible. Less background noise means more system resources focused where they matter: keeping iPhone gaming smooth and responsive.
This feature allows apps to update themselves in the background — great for email and weather apps, but completely unnecessary while gaming. Go to Settings → General → Background App Refresh. It can be disabled entirely, or turned off just for apps that don't need to be running while playing. Less background activity = more power focused on the game.
Low Power Mode slows down the CPU and limits frame rates. It might not be noticeable while browsing the web, but during a fast-paced game? It shows. If FPS drops for no clear reason, check if Low Power Mode is on: Settings → Battery. If Low Power Mode is active, switch it off before playing.
Game Mode boosts gaming performance in three ways: reduces background activity to focus resources on gaming, improves Bluetooth controller response and lowers audio delay for a more immersive experience, and reduces input and audio lag for more responsive gameplay.
Settings → Game Mode → Enable. Once on, it automatically activates when a game is started.
Focus Mode enables broader distraction elimination by silencing notifications and prioritizing information relevant to the current task. It can be set up for automatic activation during gaming.
Settings → Focus → tap + → select Gaming → Next → customize notifications: add contacts who can call at any time or press "Allow None" for no interruptions → select "Turn Gaming on Automatically" → Done. Then: Settings → Focus → Gaming → Add Schedule or Automation → select App → pick the game apps that will trigger this mode automatically.
Enable Airplane Mode → then manually re-enable Wi-Fi only — this disables background cellular tasks while maintaining internet connectivity. Result: lower battery consumption and a processor more focused on the game.
Storage isn't just about how many apps fit on the phone — it affects gaming speed too. When iPhone's storage is nearly full, it starts to slow down: apps take longer to open, animations get choppy, and games feel sluggish. This is especially noticeable on devices with under 10% free space left. To check: Settings → General → iPhone Storage.
Many modern mobile games now include performance options. Look in the game's settings menu for terms like Graphics, Frame Rate, Performance Mode, or Battery Saver Mode. Dropping the visual effects a notch means the iPhone doesn't have to work as hard. Testing this in Genshin Impact, PUBG Mobile, and racing games consistently produces the same result: more consistent frame rates and fewer stutters.
Once iPhone starts heating up, iOS steps in and slows things down to protect the hardware. No matter how optimized the settings are — if the phone is hot, FPS will drop. Keep the phone cool while gaming. That might mean taking the case off before a long session. Most cases — especially thick ones — trap heat, and the phone gets hot much quicker. If gaming for 30 minutes or more, let it breathe.
