How to Secure Your iPhone and Protect Your Privacy — Complete 2026 Guide

Right out of the box, the Apple iPhone is considered one of the most secure and private devices available. Unfortunately, this means most iPhone users think they don't need to do anything else. The truth is it's worth taking time to dig into your iPhone security settings and monitor what you're doing.

1. Strong Passcode and Face ID / Touch ID

iPhone should be protected with a strong password: 8-12 random characters that are easy to remember and type in when unlocking the device. If devices are not protected by a strong password, the phone will be easier to break into. To enable or change the passcode: Settings → Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode) → Turn Passcode On or Change Passcode → tap Passcode Options to choose the type or length of passcode preferred.

2. Stolen Device Protection

Stolen Device Protection prevents thieves from accessing sensitive data even if they know the passcode. The protection only activates when the user is in an unfamiliar area away from home or work. Many actions require biometric security with this protection enabled, including: accessing saved passwords and payment methods, turning off Lost Mode, erasing content and settings, and setting up a new device.

Apple also introduced Security Delay — an added buffer that gives users time to mark their phone as lost or stolen, locking the thief out from using it.

To enable: Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Enable Stolen Device Protection.

2026 update: In iOS 26.4, Apple began enabling Stolen Device Protection automatically on all iPhones rather than requiring manual activation.

3. Two-Factor Authentication

Since Apple ID controls iCloud data, backups, messages, photos, and the ability to remotely erase devices, protecting it also protects the iPhone entirely. To enable: Settings → Your Name → Password & Security → Turn On Two-Factor Authentication. Even if someone knows the Apple password, they cannot break in without the code sent to the phone.

4. Find My iPhone

Enabling Find My for iPhone keeps the user connected to their device even if it's lost or stolen. The device can be seen on a map including where it has been, improving chances of recovery. If the device cannot be retrieved, personal data can be remotely erased. Find My also automatically activates Activation Lock, which requires the Apple Account to be entered before anyone can erase or reactivate the device.

To enable: Settings → Your Name → Find My → Find My iPhone → enable.

5. Review App Permissions

iPhone allows control over which apps can access personal information such as location, contacts, camera, and microphone. Regularly reviewing these permissions protects privacy and ensures apps only access information necessary for their functionality. From Settings, tap Privacy & Security and select any app to change its permission settings.

For location specifically: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → tap any app to adjust when it can access location or turn it off completely. If sharing only approximate location (not exact) is preferred, turn off Precise Location for specific apps.

6. Block App Tracking

When opening a new app, a pop-up will ask whether to allow the app to track activity. Tap Ask App Not to Track to refuse. If the prompt was missed: Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking → toggle off Allow Apps to Request to Track. This blocks the tracking system across the entire device.

7. Advanced Data Protection — Full iCloud Encryption

By default, iCloud encrypts data in transit and at rest, but the encryption keys are stored at Apple data centers.

For stronger security: enable Advanced Data Protection, which enables end-to-end encryption on backups, making it so Apple cannot access them or most synced data.

To enable: Settings → Your Name → iCloud → Advanced Data Protection → enable.

8. Safety Check — Comprehensive Sharing Review

To access Safety Check: Settings → Privacy & Security → Safety Check. Safety Check on iPhone allows quickly stopping information sharing, or reviewing and updating sharing with individual people and apps. It covers: stopping sharing information with specific people, information apps have access to, and updating device and Apple Account security.

9. Control What Appears on the Lock Screen

Settings → Face ID & Passcode → under "Allow Access When Locked" → turn off Today View and Search, Notification Center, and Reply with Message. This prevents someone from accessing information without unlocking the phone.

10. USB Restricted Mode

USB Restricted Mode was created to block forensic tools from accessing iPhone data through the port. With the mode enabled, these tools cannot establish a data connection unless the device is unlocked, protecting data even if the iPhone is stolen. To control: Settings → Privacy & Security → Wired Accessories.
