With cyber threats on the rise, securing a WhatsApp account has become a necessity rather than an option — especially as the app is used for sensitive personal and professional conversations.
Two-Step Verification acts as an extra security wall for your WhatsApp account. By enabling it, even if someone steals your SIM card and tries to set up WhatsApp on another phone, they won't be able to get in without the secret 6-digit PIN you've set.
How to enable: Settings → Account → Two-Step Verification → Enable → enter a 6-digit PIN → add a backup email address for account recovery.
WhatsApp lets you control who can see your profile photo, Last Seen status, and updates. Options include "Everyone," "My Contacts," "My Contacts Except," and "Nobody." To prevent strangers from tracking your online activity, choosing "My Contacts" or "Nobody" is recommended.
Recommended settings: Settings → Privacy:
Chat Lock hides sensitive conversations inside a separate "Locked Chats" folder accessible only via fingerprint, Face ID, or passcode — preventing anyone from accidentally accessing private messages even when using your phone.
How to enable: Open the conversation → tap the contact name at the top → scroll down → tap "Lock Chat."
Disappearing Messages sets a time limit after which messages auto-delete: 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days. This not only saves storage but prevents old messages from being misused.
How to enable: Tap the contact or group name → Disappearing Messages → select the desired duration.
Three important settings in the Advanced section that most users overlook: Block unknown account messages — filters suspicious activity from unfamiliar accounts. Protect IP address in calls — routes calls through WhatsApp's servers instead of direct connections, making it much harder for others to determine your location. Disable link previews — prevents WhatsApp from contacting external websites to fetch link details, protecting your IP address from exposure.
How to access: Settings → Privacy → Advanced → enable all three.
Strict Account Settings is a new feature launched by WhatsApp in January 2026 that bundles multiple protection settings into a single toggle.
When enabled: attachments and media from unknown senders are automatically blocked, calls from unknown numbers are silenced, link previews are disabled, and high-volume unknown messages are blocked. Two-step verification is also automatically enabled along with security code change notifications.
Individual features of Strict Account Settings cannot be toggled off independently once the main setting is enabled — it functions as an integrated package.
How to enable: Settings → Privacy → Advanced → Strict Account Settings.
WhatsApp allows encrypting backups stored on Google Drive or iCloud with a password or a 64-digit encryption key — ensuring that even Facebook and Google cannot access the content of your backups.
How to enable: Settings → Chats → Chat Backup → End-to-End Encrypted Backup.
