How to Limit Internet Speed on Your Router

Is your internet package running out before the renewal date? Do you notice your connection slowing down because of the devices sharing the router? The solution is simpler than you think — no software required. All you need is access to your router's settings page to take full control of your internet speed. In this guide, we'll walk you through how to limit internet speed on your WE VDSL router, covering all available device models from both Huawei and ZTE, including how to set individual speed limits for each connected device.

Why Should You Limit Internet Speed on Your Router?

Limiting and controlling the internet speed for devices connected to your Wi-Fi network is extremely important. If the speed is left fully open, the package is likely to run out before its renewal date due to heavy consumption and exceeding the monthly data cap — especially when connected devices are frequently used to watch YouTube, Facebook, or Instagram videos.

In short, setting speed limits gives you full control over your data usage and ensures a fair, stable connection for everyone in the household.

Two Ways to Limit Internet Speed

There are two options: the first is to limit the total internet speed on the router, which reduces the speed across all connected devices. The second is to set an individual internet speed limit for each device separately.

Important note: Only the newer routers provided by WE — formerly known as TE Data — support internet speed control. Older devices do not. The "new routers" referred to here are VDSL routers that deliver ultra-fast internet on WE's new packages, starting from 30 Mbps up to 200 Mbps.

How to Access Your Router's Settings Page

Before doing anything, you need to log in to your router's control panel:

Simply type 192.168.1.1 into your browser and press Enter to open the router's settings page. If a warning message appears saying "Your connection is not private," just ignore it by clicking Advanced and then Proceed to 192.168.1.1.

In the Username field, type admin. In the Password field, enter the password printed on the back of the router next to the word "Password." If there is no password listed, type admin again, then click Log in.

Part One: Limiting Total Internet Speed

1. WE Huawei Routers — HG630, HG633, and DG8045

All of these Huawei devices offer internet speed control through the Bandwidth Control feature, which allows you to fully manage the router's total data transfer rate.

Steps:

  1. Log in to the router settings page as described above.
  2. Click on the Internet tab in the top horizontal menu, then click Bandwidth Control on the left side.
  3. The total data rate is controlled via the Ingress bandwidth field. Entering 128 sets the internet speed to 5 Mbps, entering 256 gives 10 Mbps, entering 512 gives 20 Mbps, and so on.

2. WE New Router — Huawei DN8245V-56

The Huawei SuperVector DN8245V is one of the latest routers offered by WE, and it has a different settings interface from previous devices.

Steps:

  1. Log in via 192.168.1.1 using the same method.
  2. Click on System Information on the left, then click DSL, then scroll down to DSL Mode.
  3. To cut the internet speed in half, select ADSL 2+. For a further reduction, choose ADSL 2, and so on.

3. WE Router — ZXHN H168N by ZTE

This router does not include a Bandwidth Control feature, so internet speed is limited by controlling ADSL Modulation — essentially disabling certain frequency bands to cap the overall speed.

Steps:

  1. Log in to the settings page.
  2. Click WAN Setting or Internet from the top menu, then click WAN on the left, then select DSL Modulation Parameters.
  3. Uncheck the following options: ADSL 2plus (G.992.5), ADSL_G.lite (G.992.2), ADSL_2plus_AnnexM (G.992.5), and VDSL2 (G.993.2).
  4. Click Apply to save the settings.

4. WE New Router — ZXHN H188A by ZTE

Steps:

  1. Log in to the settings page.
  2. Click Internet from the top menu, then WAN from the left, then DSL Modulation Parameters.
  3. Uncheck the relevant frequency bands, then click Apply to apply the changes.
  4. Alternative method: Click Local Network from the top menu, then WLAN from the left, then WLAN Global Configuration. Under the Mode option, select IEEE 802.11b Only, then click Apply — this will set the router's total Wi-Fi speed to approximately 5 Mbps.

5. ZTE Router — ZXHN H108N

Steps:

  1. Log in to the settings page.
  2. Click on Network, then WAN, then ADSL Modulation, and uncheck the same frequency options mentioned above. This will reduce the internet speed to the desired limit.

Part Two: Setting Individual Speed Limits Per Device

1. Routers HG630, HG633, and DG8045

Go to the router settings, click Internet, then Bandwidth Control on the left, and scroll down. To manage Wi-Fi-connected devices, click Edit next to SSID. To manage cable-connected devices, click Edit next to LAN.

Under Traffic management type, you'll find three options:

The first is IP QoS classification for controlling speed via the device's IP address. The second is MAC QoS classification for controlling speed via each device's MAC address. The third is LAN QoS classification for devices connected via cable.

Select MAC QoS classification — all connected devices will appear with their MAC addresses. Choose the target device from the Mac address field, then set its maximum speed in the Upload max field. Note that speed is measured in kilobytes per second. You can repeat this step for any other device on the network.

2. Router DN8245V-56

Steps:

  1. From the left panel, click Advanced, then Application, then QoS.
  2. Click New, set the minimum speed you want, then the maximum speed, check Enable, and click Apply — speed values are in kilobytes.
  3. To link this speed to a specific device, click New under Classification Configuration, scroll down to Match Condition, and in the Destination MAC field, enter the MAC address of the device you want to limit.
  4. Scroll down to Queue Config, select the speed profile you created earlier, then click Apply to assign the speed limit to the chosen device.

Final Thoughts

Limiting internet speed from the router is a completely free and highly effective solution for anyone who wants to control their monthly data consumption or distribute bandwidth fairly among household members. Whether you're using a Huawei HG630, HG633, DG8045, the newer DN8245V, or ZTE devices like the H168N, H188A, or H108N — this guide covers every scenario step by step. Once you've applied the settings, run a speed test to confirm the new limits are working correctly.
