How to Hide Your Wi-Fi Network on Any Router

Hiding your Wi-Fi network is an important step for protecting your router from intrusion and surveillance attempts. The best protection method is hiding the network entirely so it doesn't appear to anyone during a scan — ensuring complete privacy. When someone searches for nearby Wi-Fi networks to connect to, your network simply won't show up because it's hidden. Only you can connect to it by manually entering the network name and password.

The method for hiding your Wi-Fi network is straightforward and requires no software — it's done entirely through the router's settings page.

Accessing the Router Settings Page — Same for All Router Types

Open any browser, type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar, and press Enter. You'll be asked to enter the username admin and a password — usually admin as well, though sometimes it's different and printed on the back of the router next to WLAN Key. Then click Login. The method for accessing the router settings page is the same for all router types.

Method One: Hiding Wi-Fi on a TP-Link Router

After logging in, click the Interface Setup tab at the top, then go to the Wireless sub-tab and scroll down until you find the option called Broadcast SSID. Disable it by setting it to NO. Finally, click Save Changes to apply the new settings.

Method Two: Hiding Wi-Fi on an Old TE-Data Router

After logging in to the router settings page, click Basic on the left side, then click WLAN beneath it. Check the box next to Hide broadcast to activate it, then click Submit to apply the new settings. The Wi-Fi network will be permanently hidden from any device scanning for nearby networks. To make the network visible again, simply repeat the same steps and uncheck the box.

Method Three: Hiding Wi-Fi on Old WE Router — ZXHN H108N

After entering the router settings page, click the Network tab on the left side, then click WLAN, then click SSID Settings. Check the box next to Hide SSID, then save the settings.

Method Four: Hiding Wi-Fi on New WE Routers

For newer WE router models — ZXHN H168N, HG630 V2, HG633, DG8045, DN8245V, and H188A — each model has a slightly different settings interface, so detailed steps for each are covered in a dedicated article specific to WE's newer router lineup.

Connecting to the Hidden Network After Hiding It

After hiding the network, you'll need to add it manually on any new device you want to connect.

On Windows 10

Open Settings using Windows key + I. Go to Network & Internet, then click Wi-Fi in the left menu, then Manage known networks, then click Add a new network.

A window will appear — enter the network name in the Network name field and select WPA2 as the security type. Enter the password, then enable both Connect automatically and Connect even if this network is not broadcasting by checking the boxes next to them. Finally click Save to connect to the hidden Wi-Fi network.

On Windows 7 (also works on Windows 8 and 10)

Right-click the internet icon in the taskbar near the clock, then click Open Network and Sharing Center. In the new window, click Set up new connection or network. Select Manually connect to a wireless network and click Next. On the following page, enter the network name in Network name, select the encryption type, and type the password in Security key. Click Next and the computer will connect to the hidden Wi-Fi network.

On Mobile

Go to your phone's Settings, open Wi-Fi and enable it, then tap Add Network. In the window that appears, enter the details of the hidden Wi-Fi network, then tap Connect and the phone will connect to the hidden network.

Final Thoughts

Hiding your Wi-Fi network is one of the most effective security measures you can take for your home network, available on all router types at no cost. After hiding the network, keep the network name saved somewhere safe as you'll need it every time you want to connect a new device. And if you ever want to make the network visible again, just return to the same settings and uncheck the hide option.
