Mid-game, deep in a conversation, or just finishing something important — and suddenly the app closes. Here's why it happens and how to fix it.
If Android apps keep crashing or freezing, it's usually because you're low on storage space or running too many apps at once. Other reasons include an unstable Wi-Fi connection or an outdated app version. The most common causes: too many apps open simultaneously — each consuming CPU and memory resources — and insufficient storage space, which apps require to function properly.
Additional causes include low RAM from too many background apps straining memory, unstable internet connections particularly for apps relying on streaming or data syncing, and hidden malware hijacking system resources and causing crashes.
Fix 1: Restart the Phone
Restarting clears temporary files, stops all running processes including background apps consuming resources, and gives the phone a fresh start.
Fix 2: Force Stop the App
Force-stopping a frozen app: Settings → Apps → See all apps → select the crashing app → Force Stop. Restart the phone and relaunch the app to see if the force stop resolved the issue.
Fix 3: Clear the App Cache
Clearing app cache is a go-to troubleshooting step for crashing apps. Cached files are temporary data the app stores to speed up loading — like login information and settings — but they can become corrupted and cause persistent crashes. To clear: Settings → Storage → Other apps → app name → Clear Cache.
Fix 4: Clear App Data
If clearing the cache doesn't help, clearing app data resets the app to its initial installation state. Note: this erases app settings and personal data within the app if it isn't linked to a cloud account. Settings → Apps → app name → Storage → Clear Data.
Fix 5: Update the App and Android OS
If the crash is affecting multiple users, app developers typically identify the issue quickly and release a fix. Check the Google Play Store for an available update for the crashing app and install it.
Bug accumulation and stability problems increase when Android or apps go without updates.
Fix 6: Check App Permissions
Android's modern permission management system requests permissions selectively. If an app doesn't handle a denied permission gracefully, it may crash. Try toggling denied permissions one by one to identify which one is causing the crash. Settings → Apps → app name → Permissions.
Fix 7: Free Up Storage Space
Ways to free up space: move photos and videos to USB or cloud storage, delete unused apps — especially games that consume large amounts of space — and clear the downloads folder of anything no longer needed.
Go to Settings → Storage to see available space and a breakdown of what's consuming it.
Fix 8: Update Google Play Services
Outdated Google Play Services can impact app performance and cause crashes. Settings → Apps → search for "Google Play Services" → three-dot menu → Uninstall updates → Storage → Clear Cache and Clear Data → then update it from the Play Store.
Fix 9: Uninstall and Reinstall the App
Reinstalling the crashing app replaces corrupted data from failed updates or installations. A clean install can also remove malicious code hiding in corrupted files.
Fix 10: Boot into Safe Mode
Restarting Android in safe mode disables all third-party apps temporarily. If the phone stops crashing in safe mode, it's a sign the issue is with something you installed, not the phone itself. To activate: hold the Power button → long-press "Power Off" → tap OK to restart in safe mode.
