Checking your hard disk's health is essential for every PC and laptop user. Hard drives have a limited lifespan and their condition degrades with use. Monitoring your hard disk's health allows you to identify potential problems early and back up important data before a catastrophic failure occurs.
GSmartControl is a free specialized tool for checking hard disk health using the built-in S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) system. After downloading and installing the program, open it and your connected hard drives will appear in the main window. Double-click on the drive you want to check — a new window will open with detailed information including the overall health assessment, manufacturer, serial number, capacity, and operating hours.
Navigate to the Self-Tests tab and click Short Self-test to run a quick diagnostic. Results will appear after the test completes — Passed indicates a healthy drive, while any errors indicate problems that need attention. The Temperature Log tab shows the drive's temperature history over time.
CrystalDiskInfo is another excellent free tool that displays the hard disk health status immediately upon launch — showing Good, Caution, or Bad in a clear and simple interface. It also shows the current temperature, total power-on hours, error rates, and full S.M.A.R.T. data. It supports both HDD and SSD drives and is compatible with all Windows versions.
If the health check shows Caution or Bad, immediately back up all your important data to another storage device. A failing hard drive can stop working at any time without warning. After securing your data, consult a specialist to decide whether to repair or replace the drive.
