Google Password Manager on Android Gets Passkey Import and Export — Ending Password Manager Lock-In With CXP Protocol and Unsafe Export Protection

End of Passkey Lock-In on Android — Google Lays the Foundation

Colleagues at Android Authority managed to activate a still-hidden interface within Google Password Manager that allows both importing and exporting passkeys. This is important since on Android devices, CXP transfer relies on Google Play Services and the Google Password Manager to actually shuffle keys between providers. This proves that the required groundwork is already there.

The Problem Being Solved — Passkeys Locked to Their Provider

One of the bigger frustrations with passkeys has always been that they're tied to wherever you set them up. Move to a new phone or switch password managers, and you're stuck re-registering at every site from scratch. Google Password Manager passkeys may finally have a fix for that on Android.

How Does the Feature Work?

The import and export feature handles that with a single flow. Open a supported password manager on Android, and you'd get a prompt to transfer your passkeys over. Android Authority tested this with Bitwarden and it worked.

In its current form, Google Password Manager's settings show options to "Import passwords & passkeys" and "Export passwords & passkeys" instead of password-only options. While there is no direct option to export passkeys to another app, the description says you will be prompted to transfer passkeys when you open another password manager app.

CXP Protocol — The Standard That Makes It Possible

Transfers rely on the Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP), a FIDO Alliance standard that keeps passkeys secure between apps.

Protection Against Exploitation

There's also a safety guard baked in. Google will reportedly block exports to apps that don't meet security standards. A warning message reads "Export blocked for your protection" when attempting to export to an unqualified app.

Apple Beat Google

If you use an iOS 26 or macOS 26 device or one of the bigger password managers out there, notably Bitwarden and 1Password, then you already have access to CXP and passkey migration. Despite being among the CXP backers, Google has yet to officially implement CXP into Google Password Manager and, by extension, Android itself.

Broader Impact on Android

In all likelihood, you will start to see passkey migration options not only in Google Password Manager but also in other managers that run on Android and support passkeys, like Samsung's Samsung Pass.

FAQs

Android Authority reveals hidden interface in Google Password Manager enabling passkey import and export via FIDO Alliance's Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP). Feature works with Bitwarden in testing. Google will block export to insecure apps. Apple already shipped this in iOS 26. Official launch date not yet announced.
