Google is introducing Googlebook, a new category of laptops built from the ground up for Gemini Intelligence. These devices feature the Magic Pointer for contextual suggestions and custom widgets to help you organize your tasks. Googlebook works with Android to let you access phone apps and files instantly.
Over 15 years ago, we introduced the Chromebook, a laptop built for a cloud-first world. As computing shifts toward AI, we see an opportunity to rethink laptops again.
Googlebooks will run on a modern operating system that blends elements of ChromeOS with the Android tech stack.
The company declined to share the name of the operating system but clarified that "Aluminium OS" was a codename during development and would not be the actual name.
Googlebooks will ship with Magic Pointer, a new AI-powered cursor with Gemini built in. Rather than just pointing and clicking, wiggling the cursor will surface quick, contextual suggestions based on what's on your screen. For example, if you point at a date in an email, you can quickly set up a meeting. Or, if you select two images like your living room and a new couch, you can visualize them together.
Users will be able to access the Google Play Store to run Android apps natively on their laptops. For apps that aren't installed locally, a dedicated taskbar button will allow users to stream applications directly from a nearby Android smartphone.
With Quick Access, you can easily view, search or insert your phone's files on your laptop — no transfers needed.
Initial third-party OEM partners include Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. The Google Pixel team declined to comment on whether they would develop their own Googlebooks.
Googlebooks will reportedly all be premium devices with a rectangular LED light called a glowbar on their lids.
Googlebooks will "sit at the more premium end of the laptop market," contrasting Chromebooks, which will continue to be supported post-launch.
