Google Gemini Gets a Full Makeover — From Chat Window to AI Workspace

Google is rolling out a massive redesign for its popular Gemini chatbot app. This visual overhaul replaces the familiar AI layout with a more modern, fluid aesthetic that has already begun appearing for some users on iOS.

The Homepage — First Impressions

The most immediate change is the homepage, which now sees Gemini switch to a pill-shaped prompt box. Voice input and Gemini Live are at the right, with a "plus" button opening a bottom sheet for quick access to Photos, Camera, and recent images.

The greeting is now "Hi [name], what's on your mind?" centered with the Gemini spark just above. The background has ditched its static look for a colorful, pulsating gradient that becomes even more prominent once a chat begins.

Unified Tools Menu — The Core Change

Tools appear in a list below with descriptions: Images, Videos, Music, Canvas, Deep Research, and Guided Learning. Google has been testing this unified approach on Android and desktop web, while it's already live in Gemini for Mac.

The model picker has moved from the prompt box to the top-left corner of the UI as a dropdown, creating more space within the new pill-shaped prompt box.

Gemini Live — Fully Redesigned

Gemini Live is also receiving a major visual overhaul. Instead of a fullscreen interface, Gemini Live now takes over the Gemini app homepage. The top bar changes to "Live with Gemini" and adds the transcript button. The voice waveform is placed at the center flanked by controls for screen sharing and microphone muting.

iOS vs Android — Two Different Approaches

On iOS, this redesign heavily leverages Liquid Glass for a more premium feel.

The Android version takes a different but equally deliberate approach: a cinematic black-to-blue gradient home screen, a redesigned navigation drawer, and a dramatic Live mode interface. The Android version forgoes the animated particle effects of the iOS build in favor of cleaner, flatter depth.

Availability

The rollout is currently limited to a small number of iOS users. A wider timeline for both Android and broader iOS availability hasn't been confirmed, but a full announcement is expected at Google I/O on May 19-20.
