Blocking Pornographic Websites Permanently from Your Router by Changing DNS — For All Devices 2026

28/03/2026

Blocking adult and inappropriate websites at the router level is the most effective method for protecting all family members, as it applies to every device connected to the Wi-Fi network without requiring any software installation on individual devices.

How DNS-Based Blocking Works

DNS (Domain Name System) translates website names into their numerical IP addresses. By replacing your router's default DNS with a filtering DNS service, websites are blocked before they can be accessed from any device on your network — the filtering DNS simply refuses to resolve the addresses of inappropriate websites.

Recommended Free Filtering DNS Servers

CleanBrowsing Family Filter: Primary: 185.228.168.168 — Secondary: 185.228.169.168

OpenDNS Family Shield: Primary: 208.67.222.123 — Secondary: 208.67.220.123

Cloudflare Family: Primary: 1.1.1.3 — Secondary: 1.0.0.3

Steps to Change DNS on Your Router

Open your browser and go to 192.168.1.1 (or 192.168.0.1). Log in with admin/admin or the credentials printed on the back of your router. Navigate to Network → LAN → DHCP Server. Replace the Primary DNS Server and Secondary DNS Server values with your chosen filtering DNS addresses. Click Save and restart the router. All devices on your network will be protected immediately.
