Android Unifies Call Log — WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal Will Appear Directly in the Default Phone App With Android 16.1

27/05/2026

The End of Two Separate Calling Worlds on Android

If you are constantly making VoIP calls on apps like WhatsApp, Telegram or Messenger from your Android phone, then you may soon be able to dial contacts on those apps straight from your default phone dialer app. Google has been testing this feature for a while now, and it seems like it is finally ready for a wider rollout under the Calling accounts domain.

The Old Problem — Two Separate Call Logs

For years, Android users have had two separate calling worlds: traditional cellular calls handled through the Phone app and internet-based VoIP calls handled separately inside messaging apps. That separation created unnecessary friction in daily use. If someone missed a WhatsApp call, they had to manually open WhatsApp to see it.

The New Solution — Jetpack Telecom 1.1.0

The integrated call logging feature allows system dialer apps, like Phone by Google, to "surface call logs directly from third-party VoIP apps." Additionally, users can "initiate a callback to a VoIP contact straight from their native system dialer."

If you have an Android phone running Android 16.1 and above, you'll soon see calls from third-party apps appear alongside regular cellular calls inside your main call history. You'll also be able to return those calls directly from the dialer without opening the original app first.

Privacy Protection — Apps Stay in Control

Google is also giving developers a Call Log Exclusion capability to "prevent specific calls from being logged into the system call logs." Users can also turn off the feature for each app individually.

To safeguard against spam, native dialers utilize secure package allowlists to control VoIP display.

The Starting Point — Google Meet First

The initial launch begins with Google Meet. Appearance of other apps depends on how quickly developers update their applications.

Comparison With iPhone — iOS Did It Years Ago

This is something iPhones have supported for some time now through Apple's CallKit framework, and Android has long felt behind in this area.
